Mr. Jagat Vikramarathne, the speaker who commented further here.
Today is a very crucial step for our country’s future development and economic stability. The existence and strength of any sovereign state is determined by the economic independence that exists in that country. Taxation is a key tool to generate state revenue and strengthen the country’s development process.
But often people have a negative attitude on taxes. That negative attitude was given to the people by tax collectors and rulers. But when people get the feeling of nationality, people start to change. People thought taxes were a burden. We’ve seen all over history that there were huge amounts of tax abductions. It should be disliked and dislikedly declared the political blessing.
People don’t know what happened to the tax money paid by the people. The tax payers didn’t have a clear vision. The current government has currently managed to change this situation and create a positive attitude among the people about tax paying. At this moment I pay my respects to the tax paying people, contributing to the schemes that the government is doing for the country.
There is confidence in the people today that the money they pay will get a benefit. Highways, highways, electricity projects in the country are operating today using local funds. There is pride among the people today that they have started working on the Kandy Highway without taking loan from anyone. Cabinet approval has also been given to start work on Kurunegala-Galewela road. Today we have become strong as a country where development is done by using local money without being debt to foreign countries.
The great Dagab, lake attachment of the past was created with the contribution of everyone. Only through collectiveism can make this country a prosperous country by developing. And the money collected as taxes today is being deployed for the welfare of the people of the country. 50,000 crores allocated in the face of hurricane Ditwa and it showed. And the presidential funds have benefited the people tremendously today. Asak, giving relief to educated children with a corner. All these are done using local funds.
Need to bring real information about tax money benefits, operational development projects to the country. Therefore, the use of tax money is confirmed in the people of the country about transparency. This is very important. So we expect to expand the tax base from this national program. This is expected to build a positive attitude among the people to increase tax compliance and reduce tax abductions. If everyone in general pays taxes, there is a possibility of reducing the weight of taxes imposed on others.
We don’t ask one bee to build a bee colony. Thousands of bees together are creating that bee colony. It’s going to be a great creation. It’s not something a single bee does. Created by the entire bee community. Therefore Tax Energy 2026 is not just a tax collection campaign, it is a national program that produces responsible citizens who love the country and love the country. I would like to thank everyone who dedicated to making this noble work a success.
Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Finance and Programs Mr. Anil Jayanta Fernando
Our contribution to the journey towards economic and social transformation by creating an understanding of taxation as citizens of the country. As citizens we all have a lot of personal goals and activities.
However, we think that personal goals can be accomplished on one of those most cannot be accomplished on one of them alone. The success of a public society depends on the support of the people.
Today’s taxes have been made a simple process. So the tax charging system is going properly today. And the government has identified the responsibility of how to use that fairly charged money for the betterment of the society. People won’t pay taxes if that financial discipline can’t be shown properly. It has happened in the past. Therefore the government has started the tax charging process with high financial discipline. We don’t give room for fraud, corruption, waste. So to build the country we all must contribute to this cause with emotion. It shouldn’t be done by the law. So we believe that all the people of the country will do their responsibility properly.
Deputy Minister of Economic Development Nishantha Jayaveera, Customs Director General Wimal Liyanagama, Director General MBNA Premarathna, Director General of Surabadu Department, Director General Rukdevi Fernando, Director of Local Revenue Department also commented here.
